Sessions
In our sessions we aim, over the term, to ensure the children have had the opportunity to try a range of athletics disciplines focussing on agility, balance & co-ordination in a fun and supportive environment. In addition if the local schools are attending activities such as cross country, sportshall, quad kids and district athletics we help prepare them for these in our sessions too.
A session always starts with athletic warm up drills, team relay and often an agility activity. There is always a sprint or longer running activity (these are varied and if a race they are run in age groups or ability). On occasions we split into groups to enable 2 activities to run concurrently. The 2nd half of the session normally takes place in the field hall which is located downstairs at the centre. Here we rotate weekly between long jump, high jump, various throws; vortex, soft javelin, shot putt or an agility obstacle course . Our session finishes either with a lap around the 400m outside track (weather dependent) or games followed by stretching.
Coaches
Our main coaches are Mandy (Tues/Thurs), Amy & Aiden (Thursday) who are experienced athletics coaches, we are supported by Seb who is a trained coaching assistant and senior athlete. We also have support from young athletes who train with local clubs.
Do you compete during the year?
Yes! We are currently working towards our Summer Greatest Games Championship, where all Aspire to Greatness clubs will come together for a fun and competitive celebration of athletics. In the meantime, we will also be organising friendly competitions between clubs to give children the opportunity to test their skills, build confidence, and enjoy the spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship
Pathway to competitive athletics
We have strong links with Sutton & District AC and coaches will support with introductions to the club for those in year 5 up who are keen and ready to move onto competitive athletics. Some of our older athletes, those in Year 5 up who are on a waiting list or can’t commit to training at Sutton & District train with us at ATG but also can be linked members of the club and have the opportunity to compete in club competitions.
