Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the sessions take place?

David Weir Leisure Centre, Middleton Road, SM5 1SL

Is there free parking?

Yes, there is free parking in marked bays.  Car Park can get busy.

What days & times are the sessions?

Sessions are held on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 5-6pm. There is a session for older athletes on a Thursday this is a called ROAR and also runs from 5-6pm.

Where do we meet?

We meet outside the upstairs sprint hall. (we will put a message on the groups whatsapp if the meeting point changes for that session).  Please do not enter this area until the coaches are set up and ready for registration.   Please be aware there are other users on the track.

Do I need to stay?

For safeguarding purposes children under 11 will need an adult on site during the session.  Please let the coaches know if you are using the gym.  A reminder that this is a public leisure centre.

Can I watch my child?

There is a viewing area in the café where you can watch the inside track as there is limited space within the sprint hall or once we are downstairs you may watch in the field hall.   If training takes place on the outside track we ask if you would watch from the upstairs seating area.

What does my child need to wear?

Comfortable sports clothing, tshirt, hoodie, joggers, shorts or leggings.  We recommend trainers rather than plimsols. You don’t need running spikes.

Drinks & Snacks

Please bring a filled water bottle. You should not need a snack as the sessions are short.  If a snack is brought into the area please do not bring NUTS as we have children with nut allergies who attend the sessions. There is a cafeteria where you can buy drinks and hot food at the centre.

Registration

Once the coaches are set up, we will register your child on arrival for H&S & Admin purposes.  Please do not leave your child until they have been registered.  It may be you are asked for confirmation of booking so please have that ready.

Collection

The sessions normally finish in the field hall or on the outside track.  Please make sure you are there for pick up by 5.55pm so we can check the children out, thank you.

Admin and information on costs, bookings etc.

Unfortunately, our coaches cannot answer these questions on the night please contact our Admin team, Kate & Guy. They can be contacted on admin@aspiretogreatness.co.uk

Sessions

In our sessions we aim, over the term, to ensure the children have had the opportunity to try a range of athletics disciplines focussing on agility, balance & co-ordination in a fun and supportive environment.  In addition if the local schools are attending activities such as cross country, sportshall, quad kids and district athletics we help prepare them for these in our sessions too.

A session always starts with athletic warm up drills, team relay and often an agility activity.  There is always a sprint or longer running activity (these are varied and if a race they are run in age groups or ability).  On occasions we split into groups to enable 2 activities to run concurrently.  The 2nd half of the session normally takes place in the field hall which is located downstairs at the centre.  Here we rotate weekly between long jump, high jump, various throws; vortex, soft javelin, shot putt or an agility obstacle course . Our session finishes either with a lap around the 400m outside track (weather dependent) or games followed by stretching.

Coaches

Our main coaches are Mandy (Tues/Thurs), Amy & Aiden (Thursday) who are experienced athletics coaches, we are supported by Seb who is a trained coaching assistant and senior athlete.  We also have support from young athletes who train with local clubs.

Pathway to competitive athletics

We have strong links with Sutton & District AC and coaches will support with introductions to the club for those in year 5 up who are keen and ready to move onto competitive athletics.   Some of our older athletes, those in Year 5 up who are on a waiting list or can’t commit to training at Sutton & District train with us at ATG but also can be linked members of the club and have the opportunity to compete in club competitions.
